You can’t imagine the many ways that a fire will change your life. Knowing who can help and where to begin is important. With this in mind, the U.S. Fire Administration would like to point out a few things to do if you are ever the unfortunate victim of a home fire.
Fires can cause devastating damage. The many things inside your home, as well as the entire building, can be badly damaged by water, smoke, heat and flames. Things that the fire might not have burnt can be ruined because of smoke and the water used to extinguish the flames. Anything that you want salvaged for re-use will have to be meticulously cleaned by our disaster restoration specialists.
The firefighters might have had to cut holes in your home’s walls to look for hidden flames. They might even have had to cut into the roof to let the smoke and heat escape. Cleanup will take patience and time. Be extremely careful when you go back inside, especially if you touch any damaged items. Seek advice from the fire department, your insurance company and our disaster restoration experts before you clean or make any repairs.
If you have nowhere to stay, contact a local disaster relief service, such as the Salvation Army or American Red Cross. They can help find temporary accommodation, as well as medicine, food and clothing.
